Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to argue on Contradicto. This page says how far we have got, where we fall short, and how to tell us about a barrier.
Our target
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, for the game at contradicto.com and its pages. Contradicto does not fully meet that target yet. The limitations below are the ones we know about. An independent audit has not been done yet; this statement is based on our own review.
What already helps
- Typing instead of speaking. The game is played by voice, but you can always type your arguments. If the microphone is missing or blocked, the game says so and you can type instead; typed text counts exactly like speech.
- Captions. What human debaters say appears as live captions on screen, for the players and for viewers. Vera’s speech is captioned too: her words appear on screen as she speaks.
- Sound. Sound effects can be turned off, and nothing you need to play is given by sound alone.
- Motion. If your device asks for reduced motion, the game cuts its animations short.
- Text and color. Body text is at least 16 px, text sits on solid backgrounds, and the FOR and AGAINST sides are also labeled in words, not only by color.
- Languages. The game and these pages are available in English, Lithuanian, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Known limitations
- It is a voice-first game. Typing works everywhere, but the game is designed around speaking out loud, and some players will find typing against the clock harder.
- Turns are timed. A turn lasts 30, 45, or 60 seconds, chosen by the host, and the clock cannot be turned off, because the timer is part of the debate. Preparation before a match has no time limit.
- Captions trail the voice. Human speech is captioned as text after each phrase is recognized, so captions can lag a few seconds behind the voice, and recognition can mishear words.
- The jury is mostly visual. Jurors show their votes with cards and short reactions on stage. The announcer’s ticker is read out to screen readers, but not every juror’s change of mind is.
- Clips. The 15-second video clips the game makes have no text alternative.
- Pages from others. Checkout and the billing portal are run by Stripe, and sign-in with Google or Apple by those companies. Their accessibility is outside our control.
Tell us about a barrier
If something on Contradicto is hard or impossible for you to use, email [email protected]. Tell us the page or screen, what you tried to do, and the device, browser, and any assistive technology you use. A person will reply, and where we can, we will fix the problem or find another way to give you what you need.
